GOC suspends Chigwell based optometrist

The General Optical Council (GOC), the UK regulator for optometrists and dispensing opticians, has decided to suspend Angelina Bhopal, an optometrist based in Chigwell, from its register for six months.

A GOC Fitness to Practise Committee found her fitness to practise impaired on public interest grounds and on grounds of public protection, by reason of her dishonesty. This is in relation to not making an appropriate diagnosis during a patient’s MECS examination (April 2019), and then retrospectively amending the patient’s record of the test to ‘cover up’ or mitigate her actions (May 2019).

Ms Bhopal has until 9 February 2022 to appeal her suspension.
