Freedom to speak up about the GOC

At the GOC, we are committed to maintaining an open, transparent and inclusive culture. We want everyone connected with our work to feel safe and supported in raising concerns.

Speaking up about the GOC helps us protect the public and our registrants, support those we work with, and continuously improve how we regulate.

Our Freedom to speak up policy applies to individuals engaged with the GOC as:

  • employees

  • Committee members

  • workers

  • contractors

  • Council associates

  • volunteers, trainees, students and agency workers

  • former employees, workers and contractors.

We have separate speaking up guidance for registrants concerned about patient or public safety in their workplaces.

What can be raised?

Concerns can relate to anything that affects public protection or impacts an individual’s working environment at the GOC. This might include:

  • Working practices: processes or ways of working that could compromise effectiveness or public protection.

  • Welfare and wellbeing: unsafe working conditions, bullying or harassment, or concerns about the welfare of colleagues or others.

  • Information security: breaches of confidentiality or concerns about fraud.

  • Suggestions and improvements: ideas to improve the working environment, save time or money, or share good practice.

Who can you speak up to?

  • A manager, head of department or director responsible for the area you are concerned about.

  • Our Freedom to Speak Up Guardian, Nadia Denton, via [email protected] (a confidential inbox).

  • The People and Culture team via [email protected].

  • Our Senior Lead for Whistleblowing, Andy Mackay-Sim (Chief of Staff), via [email protected].
