GOC seeks to appoint four new members to Advisory Panel

The General Optical Council is looking to appoint four new members to its Advisory Panel committees.

  • Companies Committee: one Registered Medical Practitioner and one business registrant

  • Education Committee: one lay member

  • Standards Committee: one optometrist

About the Advisory Panel committees

The GOC’s Advisory Panel is a meeting of the Council’s four committees – Companies, Education, Registration, and Standards. It meets three times a year, as do the four committees. The committees are established by statue for the purpose of giving advice and assistance to Council on:

  • matters relating to business registrants other than matters required by the Opticians Act to be referred to the Investigation Committee, the Registration Appeals Committee, or the Fitness to Practise Committee;

  • matters relating to optical training, education and assessment;

  • matters relating to registration, other than matters required by the Opticians Act to be considered by the Registration Appeals Committee; and

  • matters relating to the standards of conduct and performance expected of registrants or those seeking admission to the register.

Remuneration

Members will be paid up to £185 per meeting. The roles are part time, with a commitment of approximately 2-3 days per year alongside preparation time. Meetings are typically held remotely, but may occasionally be held at the GOC’s office in Canary Wharf.

How to apply

The GOC is committed to diversifying the membership of its panels and committees to bring them further in line with its registrant base. Applications from those who identify as disabled or are from ethnic minority backgrounds are particularly welcomed, as these groups are currently under-represented.

For more information about the roles and the recruitment process, please read the Advisory Panel Candidate Pack. We particularly advise candidates to read the eligibility criteria for their intended role to ensure their application can be considered.

The deadline for applications is midnight on Sunday 29 March 2026

Please contact [email protected] with any questions, quoting reference GOC01/26 on all correspondence.
