Our EDI policy in practice
As the regulator for optical professionals in the UK, our role is to protect the public and maintain confidence in the professions we regulate. Equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) are fundamental to doing that well, so we are pleased to have published our latest EDI policy, which sets out clearly what this means in practice.
The policy reaffirms our commitment to creating an organisation where people are treated with dignity, respect and fairness. It also reflects our responsibility as a public body to meet the Public Sector Equality Duty under the Equality Act 2010 and to actively promote equality of opportunity.
But this is about more than compliance.
Good regulation relies on balanced judgement, thoughtful decision-making and the confidence of the communities we serve. Diversity of perspective strengthens that work. Inclusion ensures those perspectives are heard.
Our policy focuses on three simple but important principles:
First, fairness in how we work and make decisions
We are committed to ensuring that discrimination, harassment and victimisation have no place within our organisation. Everyone working with the GOC has a responsibility to contribute to a respectful and inclusive environment.
Second, equity in opportunity
Whether someone is applying for a role, developing their career or contributing to the organisation in another way, decisions should always be based on merit and relevant criteria. We are committed to removing barriers that can prevent people from accessing opportunities.
Third, accountability and transparency
Equality, diversity and inclusion are embedded into our governance. Council provides oversight, senior leaders are responsible for implementation, and we monitor our progress through data, annual action plans and public reporting.
This work is ongoing. Policies set expectations, but culture is built through everyday behaviours, decisions and conversations.
Our aim is simple: to create a GOC where people feel respected, where differences are valued, and where fairness underpins everything, we do.
