Public perceptions research 2026
Summary
The research shows high and improving confidence in UK eye care services. Most people are confident they will receive a high standard of care from an opticians/optometrist practice (94%) and satisfied with their overall experience of visiting an opticians/optometrist practice (89%). Meanwhile more people are accessing routine eye care, with 84% having had a sight test in the past two years.
However, the findings highlight persistent inequalities in access and experience. People facing challenges such as low income or disability, as well as those from ethnic minority backgrounds and more deprived areas, report lower confidence and are less likely to have had recent eye tests. Cost also remains a barrier, particularly the price of glasses, contact lenses and eye examinations.
